Barbara Whitehead
Barbara Mathews Whitehead was born in New York, and grew up in Massachusetts and Texas. She received a BFA and MFA from the University of Texas at Austin and studied art in Rome, Italy. She and her husband, Fred, worked together in graphic design, focusing on the design of books. Their careers spanned 25 years and won them numerous awards including two in book design from the Institute of Texas Letters — members since the 80s. Since Fred’s death in 1992, Barbara has carried on the business winning additional TIL book design awards.
As an illustrator Barbara has used the bold look of the woodcut print as her signature. Texas Christian University Press in Fort Worth published a retrospective of her wood and linocuts, From Wood to Linoleum, featuring work from her long career. Her watercolors and drawings have also been featured in books and have been shown in numerous shows and galleries.
She lives in Austin, Texas and spends summer months in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
